Personally, I don't really have a problem with this. I think you should use positive enforcement as often as possible, but I think there most certainly are misbehaviors that call for spankings. Not beatings, but spankings. Thoughts?

I don't know when I was coming up beating were normal. If you made the wrong face you could get beat and no one would say nothing.

"Spare the Rod and Spoil the child". I am against the total ban on corporal punishment. Sometimes a pit of pain is exactly what is needed for a lesson to be driven home. If kids are left without any form of discipline we will end up with a generation of little barbarians.

I've always been an advocate for corporal punishment. Positive reinforcement doesn't work all the time. When a child does something wrong then action needs to be taken immediately to teach him/her a lesson. Pampering kids only helps in making them rude and indisciplined. Some parents take it too far though. Something like this:
A prominent Texas judge who was filmed beating his daughter with a belt and cursing at her said he was merely disciplining his child and did nothing wrong.

I don't see why people overreact on harmless beatings like spanking. It's an effective form of discipline. As a child, I'd get spanked, and I'd know not to do it again. If my parent simply told me not to do it again, I would probably not listen because there would be nothing that actually happened to me.

There's something sort of oddly primitive and simple-minded about parent's viewpoint. He is just an 8 yr old...damn.disgusting actually..you needn't pamper kids, but this extreme ain't tolerable.

Occasional spanking is necessary because kids are too rebel, all light of course, no violence involved.

Hey, I had a child cuss at me while the parent did nothing. So I see nothing wrong with the father disciplining his child for misbehaving. The problem with some children is the lack of parental guidance. I see it with my own niece and nephews. I'm not in favor of beatings. Just a good old fashion spanking now and again will do the trick.

I think spankings are ok but a beating no. Now my momma could throw a shoe as good as anyone and I knew it. I knew better than to act out cause mom was bad enough don't get dad involved.
Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

After years studying psychology, I can tell you that corporal punishment, light spanking or a belt in the face, does nothing. All it does is create fear and destroy trust between a child and her parents. There is literally nothing in the literature that proves that spanking works. Removing privileges and toys DOES work. If you set clear boundaries, and follow up with consequences when the child crosses the boundaries, the bad behavior will be kept in check. I'm not saying this to sound holier than thou (I sure want to spank my daughter from time to time), but this is what I learned in school. I'm still glad the charges were dropped.

I am not in favor of spanking or hitting a child but I am glad that they dropped the charges on this issue. What a waste of the taxpayers money that would have been if that had been continued.

In my view spanking is OK, beatings are of course not.
There's a pretty clear distinction, if you're just slapping your kid on the ass because he misbehaved there's nothing wrong there and it's nobody's business but yours.
If you punch/kick your kid because you had a rough day at work however, social services need to get him away from you.

As the others said, there is nothing wrong with spankings when it's necessary. You gotta teach your kids how to behave, as long as you aren't brutally beating them.
But I do find it amusing when shitty parents get so sensitive and say:"you shouldn't hit your kids!" :-)
Until their kids beat the shit out of them when they grow up, or while they're still kids. Like in this instance:
