Your Thoughts On Stealing Of Other Rappers Lines?

Many rappers are guilty of this, Jay Z being part of that group.
Jay Z goes on to reveal that he can craft rhymes without ever leaning on another artist’s material but chooses to often times refer to Biggie’s catalog to keep his legacy alive.
I love the second part of that statement . . . chooses to refer to Biggie's catalog . . .

Admission complete. What do you guys think of line stealing/rhyme stealing by rappers? Does it prove that some of them aren't that creative for them to stoop that low?

Stooping to such a level shows they aren't capable of producing any on their own and their creativity is an all time low.I don't hate jay-z and Lil wayne without a reason and this is exactly why.
It is literally robbery, and it ain't befit their title what they would have earned over the years.

Yeah, I think we should be originals, but some things are pretty common to be said, so it's natural that they are repeated.

I think it's the same as stealing another rapper's underwear. Why on earth would you want to do that? if you can rap and write your own lyrics, you wouldn't need to steal someone else's. It just doesn't make sense when someone as accomplished as Jay does it.

I think the idea of stealing other rappers lines is low down, why cant they just come up with their own lines.
, how hard can it be.

If you do use someone else's lines then at least have the decency to change them around a bit before you do. In writing its call plagerizing - write your own lines, stealing it from someone else is weak.

Only acceptable to explicitly steal someone's lines to use it against them. Otherwise, you have to change the lyrics around and make reference to the original source. Should be a rule of music.

Yes - stealing rhymes proves some rappers are more creative than others. What cracks me up is how they get away with it. I guess there needs to be more consequences for artists to stop this practice.

Good artist borrow, Great artist steal. Lol. Just pay homage when you take someone's line. Especially a line that has a huge impact on the culture. That Drake and Rappin 4tay thing just happened and I'm glad Drake paid 100k to him for borrowing almost a whole verse. Crazy!

No one is really going to answer that stealing, right?

But I mean, on occasion, and if there is a proper context within the lyrics, I actually like that dude's spin some other people's lines. Then it becomes like quoting Shakespeare, or some other famous writer...

I guess that's not what the thread is about though...
And sadly, there's a lot of copy past being done.

In my opinion, there are only so many ideas out there that eventually people will look to the past for ideas. If you look at any music genre, artist have been copying one another for decades now. Hip-hop is definitely no exception.

I always think a rapper should be original in the industry, however seeing it happen so much lately and even more often now that Lil Wayne and his young money crew all seem to take from each other's lyrics; new rappers coming in think its perfectly okay. I just think that it doesn't really matter because the majority of the lyrics in a rap song is different except for that one line taken from another artist. I don't think its any different than someone like Ne-Yo writing a song, and then it gets sold to jay-z or j.cole or someone and then them getting the credit for creating those lyrics knowing that someone else wrote it, and they just laid it on the track and then perform it.

Where is the originality its not in this world anymore. I had a feeling that some of these rappers steal peoples' lines just to get ahead. There are some artist like Kendrick Lamar who is that last part of originality that is here.

Why rap in the first place if you knew your intentions was to steal other rapper's line. Your audience may not notice at first but soon it will catch up on you. Many rapper's out their will lose respect soon enough if everyone find out that your stealing everyone's lines or better yet ghost writing is also another one that could exclusively ruin your reputation. Just don't do it, won't be worth the attention.
