Did you ever go to a restaurant where they had a band playing and you wished that they would just shut up?
I have had this experience a few times and thought whoever got the idea that annoying background music, which often tends to be "foreground" noise, would help people enjoy themselves more?

I don't mind background music in restaurants. We only have one restaurant here that actually has a live band but they only sing the oldies. Wayy before music got annoying. I like it cause it's a nice little distraction and it prevents things from getting quiet and awkward.

I usually don't notice, but it's kind of nice to hear something different that they usually play. Especially in really unique places like local coffee shops that play some weird/interesting indie music. I don't mind, it's only for an hour of your life max.

I usually don't pay attention to the band. The music goes right by me. They are making a living playing in restaurants and as long as they are not directly by my table, I am content. With that said, I much rather just listen to the music on the stereo in the place instead of having a live band there.

Something really subtle, maybe some soft guitar, but I don't want music with lyrics. There's a Chinese restaurant I love, but they always blast Chinese pop music, and I can't stand it, it's just too loud!

in this day and age i got to give props to any restaurant that is willing to afford a live band when they can simply use a music library.

We are always paying for the experience when we dine in a restaurant. I usually order take out, but the times I've been have been pleasant when there is an actual band around. It really makes a difference and people tend to enjoy it more.

The music in restaurants is like music in malls, it is tailored to blend into the background. And I hate that kind of stuff, since it is used as a psychological tool, rather then something musically worthy.
Live bands are notch up on shit scale, but still...very low q stuff that can get irritating in no time.

At times, in Mexican restaurants the salsa music is a bit much. Mind you, I used to live in Puerto Rico. Every Sunday, my neighbor would blare a good hours worth of salsa. After a while, it got old.
The other place though that has an odd mix of music are casinos. On Saturdays, of course, the music is usually R&B, dance stuff. If you ever wander in a casino during the week, OMG, the live artist could be a guy who plays polka or folk. Your ears will bleed.

I don't mind if it's done properly, but almost always they put the volume on too loud and the band is usually not even that good. I get even more peeved when it's an acoustic session because I hate that whole scene.

Atmospheric music for restaraunts is fine for me, to put you in a certain mood. If the music is intrusive, aka stops you from talking to whoever you came to the restaraunt with, or just obnoxiously LOUD, then it shouldn't be there in the first place.

Am i the only one sounding otherwise.i have a list of hotels that play mellow jazz,it is an awesome feeling to be sitting in a restaurant chilling to some jazz.
There is this chat shop called 1 MB (Megabite),that often conducts surveys to what type of music the customers would love to hear. That is a brilliant trick to woo customers.
