A plane making a second landing attempt in stormy weather crashed at an airport on a small Taiwanese island late Wednesday, killing 51 people and injuring seven, fire officials said.

Taiwan was battered by Typhoon Matmo early Tuesday morning, and the Central Weather Bureau was advising of heavy rain through the evening, even though the center of the storm was in mainland China.

The flight was heading from the capital, Taipei, to the island Penghu, halfway between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan in the Taiwan Strait. Pictures from the airport showed a handful of firefighters using flashlights to look at wreckage in the darkness.

Penghu is a lightly populated island that averages about two flights a day from Taipei.

Taiwan's Central News Agency cites the Civil Aviation Administration as saying the flight carried 54 passengers and four flight crew and was operated by a Taiwanese airline, TransAsia Airways.

That really stinks. I'm a pilot and whenever I see a story like this about a plane crash, it puts me more on my game. Flying in bad weather like this sucks and is pretty scary, my prayers go out to them.

Oh my god, it's the first time I'm hearing about this!

What a terrible year for aviation! So many lives lost... My heart goes out to all the victims' families. Hope they stay strong in such a difficult time like this

This is why small airplanes shouldn't be flying in bad weather

Did the pilots not know about the weather? Or did the weather change suddenly? They don't allow people to fly in bad weathers! It's a shame.

Bad week for air transportation. I used to be scared of flying but now I have Xanax and in flight alcohol to help me out with that. RIP to all the people lost here.

klonopin here . Yeah, they won't let small planes fly in bad weather, and my guess it randomly got bad after they were in the air

God bless those poor families. It just isn't safe to fly any more.

Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Flying by plane is actually very safe. The safest way by travel is actually cruise ships

Honestly, this has been a terrible year for air transportation. I can't remember the last time there has been this much bad press for the industry... First the airplane that vanished, then the one that was shot down, and now this. It is pretty messed up. I wish the families and loved ones of those who perished the fortitude to bear the loss and I hope that those that survived recover quickly.

It is just a huge tragedy.

I agree, but "fortunately" this wasn't man made this time, another mistake or terrorist act at this time would have serious consequences.

I am astounded at all of these recent plane-involved disasters, what exactly is going on that increased the amount of accidents and terrorist attacks? And what absolutely sucks is that all it will do is tighten the asses of the TSA further, which sucks for people who have not and never will do anything to harm passengers on a plane.
