Question Does anyone prefer less mainstream artists?

In recent years my opinion of the mainstream hip-hop scene has deteriorated, i often find myself listening to and looking for underground artists that spit true poetry. Some of these artists are DTMD. Kev Brown. and Oddisee. If you know who they are, you also know that they all have a mellow style of music, which is what i enjoy the most. How many of you listen to underrated/underground artists?

I do prefer less mainstream artists in general nowadays. I know I said this in a previous post but once corporate companies get ahold to a musician's work, you will see a change in what they put out for their audience. I know Kev Brown and I love his work. There's another artist whose name I can't get into my head right now. He's music is very political and touches on many controversies in America. I've been following him since 2008 but I can't remember his name right now. I hate when that happens.

I always prefer underground stuff nowadays, I used to listen to Eminem, 50, Snoop and so on and while they are and will remain classics, I find myself prefering the true poetry and straight up ingenious beats of more underground artists like Jedi Mind Tricks, Hopsin, Arsonists, Immortal Technique, Aesop rock and some others.

Its just an evolution to more modern sounds and you just can't keep listening to the same old stuff in this day and age. Everything changes, so does musical taste.

I also listen to less mainstream artists like Tela or Rock City. I think they're quite underrated, and that's quite a shame considering they make good music. But in general, I listen to mainstream music most of the time. Now that you've mentioned it, it's actually been ages since I listened to the radio!

I have never liked the mainstream too much. Back in the day it was not like today. No one expected to be on the radio if they were real. Now everyone thinks that the radio is the main objective.

I honestly prefer less main stream artists, and they seem to be more hungry too.

It depends on my mood. Mainstream artists to me still have the better songs for when I feel like going straight beast mode, but when I'm not at 110%, I like to listen to underground artists because they (the ones I've found at least) tend to be more chill and focus on spitting real deep lyrics.

I like to discover underground artist. I like to find people who many people dont know about. The ones that are not widely known usually are the artist who are good. A lot of mainstream artist just get hyped up and are not all that to me.

I prefer non-mainstream artists too. It's just harder to find real good rappers between the thousands of wannabe-gangsters that can't rap for shit. For me it's actually a bit easier to find german non-mainstream rappers, because I know the scene a bit better. There's people like Sadi Gent and Karate Andi, who should be way more popular because of their skills, but they just aren't for some reason.

Yes! I love discovering new underground artists. After awhile, everyone starts sounding the same and I get bored with the same artists over and over. Especially when my favorite artists start taking forever to release new music. So finding and listening to more underground artists is always a nice option.

Sad to say, I rarely listen to underground artists. I should, but I only get as far as mainstream. I'm just one of those that really like mainstream music.

I think most people do like underground artists most. It seems like you hit the jackpot that nobody else has heard, and they seem more genuine and hungry as well. I just find it a little hard sometimes to find underground artists. I wish there was like a website where they could all post a sample of their work and people could discover them.

It would be weird if you didn't like less mainstream stuff. Or rather just lazy. Being mainstream almost by definition means that you appeal to many different people and that more often than not means that you aren't perfectly tailored to anyones personal preferences. Being more unique and hard to get into basically means that you will be less mainstream since less people will be able to appreciate your stuff, but at the same time, you can fill a certain niche.
