It's definitely a part of the culture. I don't think it's a matter of should they or shouldn't they be, because drugs are just a part of life in general. Hip/hop is about life and dealing with it, so I think that for hip/hop to stay honest and true it has to address drugs. I'm not saying every artist should talk about them or that drug use should be encouraged, I'm just saying that drugs are a part of people's lives and always will be.

drugs are something a lot of people face with difficulty in the hip hop world. you can listen to rap and not do drugs though. many rappers rap about their lives before making it big and that is often hustling drugs or dealing with addicts.

Drugs are in hip hop culture but it's not a part of it. Drugs are everywhere in every culture but is it a part of it? Does it define it? No!

I think weed is the only drug that has roots running deep into the hip-hop culture. Every other drug seems to make an appearance from time to time but nothing has had the lasting power of marijuana. Molly is currently the biggest craze, but it will die down soon.

Yes I do believe drugs are a part of hip-hop culture. But at the same time I also believe that drugs in the form of weed is a part of youth culture today, anyway. So, I'm not sure how much of it has to do with hip-hop culture except with the promotion and acceptance of it.

I don't think drugs are an integral part of hip hop, saying that would make it sound like hip hop wouldn't exist without drugs, however, drugs are a big part of the hip hop scene, you can't hear any popular song without hearing some lines about smoking some good weed, etc. But from the discussion above, weed doesn't really count, it's a soft drug.

Drugs such as weed are definitely connected with hip-hop and rap culture. But the people who rap about smoking weed all day aren't really bringing a positive impact on the listeners, which I hate.

I mean most songs do contain weed I suppose, but I am really don't consider weed a drug, more like a background substance. You don't have to do anything to marijuana like change the properties of it like you have to do with most drugs.

Imagine every rap song ever with the drugs taken out, Eminem would never exist and snoop dogg would have stayed a puppy, Dr. Dre would have been a mere intern.

Drugs are a part of many cultures and not just hip hop. Its too bad really because it doesn't have to be that way. Drugs ruin too many really good people.

That's true, but on the other hand drugs can also give an inspiration for a great song, I think they are called inspirational drugs.

Yes, and no. I don't think it it has to be a part of it.. I mean, especially hard narcotics, that's just plain stupid.

If we go by stereotypes then yes, drugs are supposed to be part of the hip hop culture. But if we are to actually scrutinize the facts objectively then drugs most certainly aren't and shouldn't be part of the hip hp culture. Some artists may talk about doing drugs, being gangsters but all that is talk. Opinions of individuals. If they want to do hard drugs, that's their choice. It doesn't mean that everyone who is into hip hop must follow their example.

I don't get why people try to say marijuana isn't a drug, it is.
    It's a mind altering substance.
It's possibly the safest drug out there in my experience, I've got nothing against the use of it but don't kid yourself, it is a DRUG.

I think that drugs are definitely a part of hip-hop culture. Just as they are a part of rock culture, pop culture, country music culture, and generally any creative art culture. Drugs have been consumed by musicians for ages. It just seemed like the question singled out hip-hop unfairly and I felt like I needed to say that.
