I thing drugs are part of a lot of cultures and it definitely has some way of shaping that culture but I don't agree with it. Drugs should not shape the person that you are

Rappers used to talk about slanging yay, ever since the success of wiz and his 90% raps about weed, everyone followed suit. I personally am tired of hearing rap about a damn plant.

Of course rappers always talked about weed but nobody made there success from just rapping about weed. It may as well be a rap sub genre with how much its talked about today in songs.

They've always been in the background at least but I don't think hip hop needs to be about it. There's plenty of other problems where rappers come from that aren't just slinging drugs or taking them. It shows they know the hustle and have street cred to impressionable kids at least.

It's a silly question. Of course drugs are a part of hip hop when so many rappers openly admit and rap about it. As for whether it "should" be, that's even sillier. They spit about things that are interesting and relevant, that's the only thing that hip-hop "should" be about.

I listen to a number of drug related references everyday and I do not partake in their use. It is part of the culture but not really much of a problem to me. I prefer to enjoy a good beer that's about it. In comparison, sexual references largely outnumber any of these drug related lyrics.

It's part of hip hop culture for those who may have already been introduce to drugs long before they probably took their music careers seriously. Second, drugs is apart of the music industry as a whole. Go into any genre of music and you will find stories on top of stories of artists in rock, pop, alternative, and country indulging in drugs. Some artists in hip hop tend to glorify this element in their work more often, which is why more is paid attention to the existence of drugs in the culture.

Yeah I mean no disrespect to those who spit out dope lyrics and poetry and also rap about drugs (not weed), I'm just saying there are kids who grow up on that music and are inspired to do shit like cocaine or worse and fall for abuse and that can really ruin your life man.

I've had friends go down with some of that whack ass substance abuse and go through rehab and all that and trust me its as nasty as it can get, seeing your life ruined and your loved ones thinking of you as a big nothing and a loser, and all you got is your friends, at least some of them who will stick out for you and offer support. That's what I meant.

Yeah, I guess drugs and weed make these rappers more "manly" and"gangsta" looking, so they openly do them and talk about it in their songs. Besides, they're rich already and you can buy everything with money, so I'm not surprised they would spend it on drugs. Some rappers seem to be very proud of their weed smoking antics like Snoop Dogg and Whiz Kalifa.

Do you think it's good for the industry though? Especially those artists who spread out from just weed?

If you're talking about weed then you're not talking about weed because weed is a plant. Drugs are wrong and shouldn't be allowed anywhere but people still take it and I don't think that hip-hop culture is that popular by doing drugs, not all artists do drugs.
