    Beef

    0 Not allowed! Not allowed!
It has a long history. Probably dates back to the NWA days when Ice Cube left them. Fortunately for them except for the acrimony created which the survivors regret but just can't brush away there were no casualties. The Tupac-Biggie beef however went onto a whole new level and culminated in both artists deaths.

These days, artists simply use beef as a way to market their songs because if you insult a guy in one song and he comes up with a response then his fans would be interested in hearing what the first rapper said that prompted the aforementioned response.

Since beef can kill careers [like Ja Rule's] should rappers wash their dirty linen in public? Wouldn't it be better for them to iron out their differences privately?

I feel that the most of it is for publicity. They know that it will boost their album sales. I also feel like there are some things that artist need to discuss among themselves and not in the public. It creates a bigger problem than it should be.

I don't even know if beef is serious anymore.

It's like watching an episode of Monday Night Raw.

I think the same , they should iron out their stuff off public, but then most of them seem to be getting promotions of it,seems to give them something easy to rap about.

As you already mentioned beef is really great to build a publicity. One famous rapper that has really benefited from beef is Jay-Z. His career took gigantic leaps when he had beef with Nas. I think that beef is not so necessary and it has a lot of negatives but it usually depends on who is starting the beef. If the guys behind the beef are smart artists and business people, then they will be able to utilize it in ways that will bring more benefits than one. To be honest on the kind of guy that actually enjoys a little bit of beef in action here and there.

Remember that 50 Kanye west beef? 50 said he'd quit rapping if kanyes album outsold his (they both dropped them the same week)
Kanye outsold him but they both had record first week sales.

    And 50 didn't quit.

Feuds or "beef" have always been a large part of the hip-hop community, especially since rap is a much more competitive music genre than others. I'd say, morally speaking, that rappers should grow up and settle their differences privately than make their fights public. However, from a financial standpoint, it is true that feuds do build publicity (well at least they used to, not so much anymore).

I liked Eminem's Cannabis diss song. Always laughed at it.

Sure, beef should be squashed privately, but that rarely happens. This is America, and we love hearing about beef, and rappers love the publicity...usually!

That's not even a thing that's only happening in america, last year we had beef here in germany between bushido and kay one, it's all just for publicity, they both made a song to diss each other right before bushidos album came out. I don't think it's bad or anything like that, because it's great promotion for the artists but sometimes I think they shouldn't get the public involved.

I would think that most people are tired of it. Eventually beef as publicity stunts won't sell as many albums as it used to.
