What do you guys think about this?

Debra Harrell works at McDonald's in North Augusta, South Carolina. For most of the summer, her daughter had stayed there with her, playing on a laptop that Harrell had scrounged up the money to purchase. (McDonald's has free WiFi.) Sadly, the Harrell home was robbed and the laptop stolen, so the girl asked her mother if she could be dropped off at the park to play instead.

Harrell said yes. She gave her daughter a cell phone. The girl went to the park—a place so popular that at any given time there are about 40 kids frolicking—two days in a row.

It really shows where we're at in society.

If we're at the point now that we're arresting parents for letting their kid socialise. It's not even like this girl is in danger of gang violence either.

    This shit is fucking stupid.

That is so crazy i mean jailed really. The mother was just letting her child do what other children do, play. I saw this story and the mother was at work across from the park and she gave her daughter a cell phone in case she needed her. I just dont understand the way the world thinks at times.

I heard about this on the news the other night. If this truly was the only reason I think it is absolutely nonsense. It really goes to show how far we have devolved as a society. Back in the day I spent a good amount of time alone. I would walk everywhere by myself and I never once felt like my parents were neglecting me. We used to think kids were smart enough to take care of themselves but it seems like now days kids are treated as they are fragile idiots who will jump in front of a moving bus as soon as no one is looking. Granted, I am leaving room for doubt. The news is always sensationalized so I wouldn't be surprised if she was a horrible parent and this was just the excuse CPS needed to pop her. They've gotten hardened criminals on tax evasion charges before so I wouldn't put it past the 5-0 to do the right thing for the wrong reason.

I mean, you should'nt let your kids walk out anywhere, but still it was a park. Even though she should have gone to the park, our society is treating this too seriously. She should not go to jail for that, a fine should be okay but jail is too much.

I don't know man. There are some sick people out there and a 9 year old without her parents at a park is prime for something bad to happen. I know there were other kids there but I don't know how the mom could feel comfortable with that. I don't think she should be arrested because it is a sad situation and obviously she couldn't afford a babysitter. There is a bigger picture here that daycare should be provided for low income families who can't afford it. This kid shouldn't have to be left at a park and should have proper care while her mom is at work. Mama was just doing what she had to do.

The girl should have been dropped off at daycare, which I understand is expensive. You can't let your nine year-old kid play at the park by themselves, no matter how many adults or children are around. It only takes one unscrupulous person to take advantage of that situation and then you've got a kidnapping on your hands.

I agree but jail was just overboard. That's the issue with Americas laws .. Everyone's been to jail now cause there are too many stupid, and strict laws

I agree, but sending her to jail was a bit dumb.

Absolutely. Jail's a little harsh. Maybe a fine, but then again, that would make daycare an even harder goal if you're stuck paying a giant fine. A warning would have been appropriate. Such situations can get out of hand really quick, but they didn't that particular time.

That is just ridiculous the girl is just nine years old and she is with other children. I am assuming that there were other adults supervising the other kids there so should not be problems. The police had nothing else better to do but arrest someone who is not doing any narcotics.
