If You Found 100 Grand ...

Cash in a bag in some random place would you keep it or give it to the pooh-lease ? I've seen a couple cases of this in the news where the reward for the person who returned it was okay but not enough in my opinion. Keeping it is stealing really. Then again I've seen 20 spots a couple times on the street and kept that. Is that stealing ?

If I found 100 grand, I'd probably wait a while in case somebody comes looking for it. If nobody comes back asking for it, I'd take it. I don't think of it as stealing, it's more that you found something. At the same time, it doesn't follow perfect morals either.

By wait awhile do you mean report it and see if someone comes looking for it ? Or hold it and just wait and hear if someone has lost $100k. I would probably do the latter. 100k come onnn.

I would stick around and wait for someone to come back. I wouldn't go to the police with that money, because there's a pretty decent chance that the person who lost it won't get it back, and then I would also be unable to claim it.

Personally I think that is the most ethical thing to do, especially nowadays.

I think that doing it could be considered inconsiderate, but for $100,000, I don't care.

I don't really know if there is any legal term for "finders keepers" but you might be able to look it up. I would end up reporting it. I guess the older I get the more I think about possible consequences when it comes to big stuff like this.

I applaud you. I'm 30 but I would have to go with Azzie on this one. I don''t know how long I'd wait before someone claims it. Maybe 48 hours max. Then I would keep it. And the way the police have acted in the past few months and with me years ago, I've never trusted them. I'm not going to hand them over 100k . Not even 5k :P

I agree. Chances are that if I hand the police money, nobody will end up getting it. Plus, 100k is a pretty tempting sum of money.

Morally, I would want to turn it in, but as many of y'all have pointed out, it could get "lost" and the true owners may never see it again. I would personally do my best to find the person who lost it within a month or so and after that I'd keep it.

I would definitely keep it. The police can find their own money.

More than half of Americans worry about running out of money in retirement, Bank of America Merrill Edge found. Allay your fears with a deferred-income annuity: You pay a lump sum to an insurance company in exchange for guaranteed monthly payments starting late into retirement.
